OUR GRAND PIANO
St Matthew-in-the-City is a superb music venue.
Groups including St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra, Auckland Choral, Auckland Youth Choir, Bach Musica NZ, Viva Voce perform at St Matthew’s on a regular basis.
Our grand piano will expand the range of music we can offer and provide visiting groups with the concert piano they need.
Our grand piano will contribute to the vibrant music life of the inner city, and provide performance opportunities to professional musicians and classical music students alike.
The liturgical music of St Matthew’s will be enriched by classical piano, and provide a beautiful accompaniment to the St Matthew’s Voices.
The story of our piano
The idea of purchasing a good grand piano for use in concerts, commercial events and services at St Matthew’s has been around for some time, with our governing body, Vestry, approving the idea in principle in 2016.
Fundraising was brisk and supported by staff and members of the parish community. A House Concert at Marivare, Epsom and other events in the St Matthew’s Needs a Piano initiative were undertaken. Our thanks go to St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra, the Trusts Community Foundation, the Aston Family Trust, the Lion Foundation and many individuals.
With helpful terms from KBB Music, and underwriting by Vestry we were able to purchase a superior, hand crafted, limited edition Shigeru Kawai Semi-Concert Grand (SK-7).
A former office in the church has been converted into a dehumidified secure room to house the piano.
The piano was dedicated at a service on Sunday, 29 July 2018, with Michael Houstoun playing, and a recital to thank donors was held the week following with Lisa Chou playing.
Watch our video which shows the piano arrival and the dedication service and first recital.
We are now able to offer groups our own, in-house grand piano.
The piano is available to be booked for concerts, events, weddings and funerals.
We have a sliding scale of charges depending on the event.
These charges will help us to pay off the last portion of the costs of the piano.
Contact our Events Manager to book the piano.
